Overview

The Ounasvaara roller ski track is located approximately three kilometres from the centre of Rovaniemi, adjacent to Santasport. The 2.5 km asphalt circuit was built for year-round cross-country ski training and makes full use of Ounasvaara’s varied terrain, providing a versatile training environment.

The course features long climbs, fast descents, and several technical corners, making it particularly well suited for endurance and interval training. Due to its demanding profile, the track is best suited to skiers with prior roller skiing experience. A separate practice area next to the stadium offers a safer environment for beginners to develop their roller skiing skills.

This track is not well suited for gradually building confidence. If you are not already comfortable roller skiing on challenging competition-grade tracks such as in Vuokatti or Kuopio, this is probably not the place to start — the layout here is even more demanding.

Completed in 2026 after more than two decades of planning, the track also serves as the foundation for the area’s early-season snowmaking trails in winter, helping to improve skiing conditions during the snow-scarce start of the season.
